Summer project 2025

 1) Research: Music videos

Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:

Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear – Tongue Tied.

How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?

- The use of narrative in this music video to engage the audience is through adding surreal and symbolic imagery. This is because the music video depicts realistic events that occur every day, making it quite engaging to a particular audience. Another way narrative is used to engage with the audience is through visual metaphors. This is because the lyrics in this video promote a strong message about mental health, specifically feeling isolated, which creates a broader overall message.

2) Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew

How are camerawork and mise-en-scène used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scène.

- The use of costumes helps us, as the audience, to identify the different people in this music video. The video includes frequent use of close-ups for us as the audience to observe the main protagonist's emotions, mood and feelings. The use of a high camera angle represents vulnerability to all of the people included in the music video.

3) Music video 3: Foals - Hummer

How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?
The editing often matches the rhythm of the song, creating a dynamic and engaging experience. This is because the quick cuts and fast-paced transitions are used during more intense musical sections. Another way editing is used in this music video is through non-linear storytelling, as the events of the clips don't portray any sort of message, making the band look authentic, similar to the Arctic Monkeys.

4) Your choice
My choice of music video is Stay - Rihanna featuring Mikkey Ekko. This is because the music video holds powerful elements such as slow motion, emotions, and relatable themes. Despite the music video not having a visually rich story, the lyrics convey a powerful message, such as being vulnerable and having to let go of something or someone you love who was both comforting and painful.

5) Music video planning

Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance- or narrative-based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:

Artist and song you have chosen: The artist and song that I have chosen for my music video, Swimming Pools (Drank) by Kendrick Lamar.

Plan for music video (narrative/performance, etc.): The plan for this music video is that it showcases a quite exaggerated scene where the main protagonist gets in trouble by the antagonist, showcasing how important it is not to lead someone else at your own problematic choices.

Link to brief (one small step to improving your community): One brief to improving your community is to not prioritise on what happened in the past and to only focus on the better perspective for the future, as it can reflect your moral acts.

Actors/performers you plan to use: The actors and performers I'm going to use in this music video are 2 friends and myself.

Locations: Locations that are being used to film this video are a house, a public area, a street, a park, and a school.

Costume/make-up/props required: The use of costumes and props I'm going to use in my music video are regular going-out clothes, phone, medication, book, pencil and a lighter.

6) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blog post, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

The plan for this 2-minute music video is to introduce the protagonist's life and how overwhelming it can be to avoid picking up bad habits from one's surroundings. The reason why I chose the song Swimming Pools by Kendrick Lamar is that, despite the song having an upbeat rhythm, the lyrics hold a powerful message about peer pressure, internal conflict, and societal habits. This music video juxtaposes the protagonist's life in school and how it reflects them when they're in their own personal space. Throughout the music video, we will explore the choices that the protagonist makes and how it can differ later on. Between the scenes, we will explore a realistic perspective on the consequences of being surrounded by the wrong group. By the end of the music video, we hope to see a positive change throughout, from the beginning to the middle and end, and how we can compare the differences of being under the influence, during the influence, and being away from it. The key message of my music video is to show that there is still potential in life even when it seems like its the end of it.
