introduction to advertising and marketing
1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.
The colour scheme in the Skittles is quite vibrant making the marketing of Skittles recognisable and drawing their audience's attention.
The USP (No other product claims or uses the image of a rainbow. Also, they have made the rainbow in the background entirely out of Skittles. This is completely different to almost every other brand. This gives the image of a rainbow an immediate connotation to Skittles. This reminds consumers of the brand.
In every Skittles advert, the slogan 'Taste the Rainbow' is repeated. The constant comparison to rainbows keeps the slogan and imagery in the audience's heads. The word 'Rainbow' connotes happiness, so the repetition of the slogan tells the audience that eating Skittles will make them feel good.
Skittles' brand name is across the middle of the advert, making it stand out in the clouds of everything else and appear quite huge. The brand has had huge success, so the name is recognisable.
The phrase 'taste the rainbow' lets the audience know that the metaphorical sentence is a way to enjoy the sweets.
