Audience: Effects theory
1) Write a definition of a passive audience: An audience that gain different messages from movies, texts, journals and more.
2) Write a definition of an active audience: An audience participating/engaging through media messages.
3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory: Taking intended messages that are passive for the audience from the producers as if it was injected in their minds.
4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:
INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: Media text - The Times newspaper
> Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
> Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY: Media text- Linked in
> Why: It tells the company or the business if the person meets there needs in order for them to gain a job.
> Why: It tells the company or the business if the person meets there needs in order for them to gain a job.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: reality tv shows such as the Kardashians
> Why: It gives the audience wanting to know more as the reality tv program is current and happening right now.
> Why: It gives the audience wanting to know more as the reality tv program is current and happening right now.
RELATIONSHIPS: BBC news
> Why: To let us know how the relationships of the celebrity is going on e.g. if they're married or if there just started a talking stage.
> Why: To let us know how the relationships of the celebrity is going on e.g. if they're married or if there just started a talking stage.
5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).
Some people may watch Blue planet for a various amount of purposes. This is because blue planet promotes documentary's to those who have an admiration towards animals, peace and satisfying videos. The reason i used the word satisfying is because blue planet shows us animals moving in a quite slow paste giving us as an audience feeling in a relaxed and peaceful audience. The music producer (Russel Emmanuel) fits the music to the video description as the music used in blue planet isn't very based or up beat and its rather a calm peaceful styled of music that is not as loud or exciting as different music genres such as Rap instrumental and other genres. However blue planet promotes entertainment as the animals tend to hunt for there prey. this is because it zooms in to the animals that are getting hunted by prey making the audience to feel eager to know what's going to happen next.
