 Introduction - Tatler Media pack


1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?

The editor introduces the magazine with a serif font of the brand tatler. The use of introducing the magazine with a large text of the brand makes it eye catching as its placed in the centre where the eye usually catches in the centre of the magazine. The use of title publication demonstrates a traditional established magazine. With the use of the colour white contrasts the background and model which enhances the picture as vibrant and bold.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader? 
The demographics towards this part of the magazine shows us that tatler is a successful brand and that there main target audience are female which shows that the use of women in the magazine covers show that these magazines are aimed towards women which markets to what female preferences are and how tatlers use of marketing shows us that they are successful due to the high income they have made.

3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?
Tatler readers probably like the fashion due to the use of marketing different items such as watches is a good example to show that they consume fashion and what is eye catching for them as watches and jewellery being spent is 180 million. This shows us that tatler is market towards women that have a high income, upper class or successful.

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the psychographic audience group that best fits Tatler?

The special editions of Tatler is a travel guide, weddings guide, beauty and cosmetics guide, spa guide, watches and jewellery guide and lastly a school guide. The use of all of these guides suggest that tatlers target audience are mainly successful women or upper class women as each guide is represented for sell satisfaction and an example for this is jewellery as we know that tatler makes 1888 million off jewellery alone which foreshadows that this magazine is targeted towards high income women due to the fact that jewellery is expensive nowadays demonstrating that there is only a limited amount of people that can have the privileges towards purchasing these guides as we know that they are going to spend more money depending on what the guide suggests them to purchase.


Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?
The use of serif font shows that this a traditional magazine whilst the use of sans serif text shows us that the magazine is trying to be modern, up to date and target towards a younger audience.

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?
The use of a green grass background with a white text enhances the brands name to be eye catching and quite vibrant as both colours equally contrast well which makes the title quite contrasting and recogniseable.

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?
The colour scheme towards the font and the background connotes a elegant, privilege and rich atmosphere as both colours contrast into a bold eye-catching title due to the colour scheme being equal and fair. This is so that the women stands out whilst appearing elegant.

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)
It shows us the model being relaxed whilst wearing a dress that appears to be perhaps expensive next to a green grass background making the audience suggest that she is in a rich society and that her status is quite high due to the use of reflecting towards the royal family as they both contrast as quite elegant and dominated. the use of a quite low angle suggests that it angle suggests that the model is appearing as quite powerful and dominated making her appear as quite strong as well.


Representations

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?
Famous people that are mentioned in this magazine is the queen and Boris Johnson. This is because it reflects the monarchy and that the readers of tatler are usually interested towards the royal family as the royal family has a strong connection towards British society.
2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
That the rich live a comfortable and easy life and that tatler is the only magazine that can read from as tatler is provided and marketed towards the rich society and not people with a low income which shows that tatler is using there power to market towards rich people in order to get a high income for there status to be even higher. This is because they market and provide expensive products and holidays which are aimed towards women with income and in a rich society.

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) 
In the cover of the tatler magazine it shows the female model being part of a black background which demonstrates diversity and inclusivity towards races making tatler a diverse brand. Whilst on the cover lines it shows and present British culture such as mention of the prime minister like Boris Johnson . The use of promoting British culture on the magazine reinforces that tatler is based in the UK and giving recognition towards UK as well.

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?
The stereotypes being shown is the model wearing a dress. This reinforces her femininity as its a stereotype that women only wear dresses. However this might challenge stereotypes as the camera angle is quite low subverting the stereotype as her having power and dominance from her facial expression presenting as calm.

Social and cultural contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
Celebrities such as singers or actors since tattler mainly only focuses on the royalty such as the royal family. This is because tatler is a magazine provided to the high income of society and the use of the royal family's imagine reinforces expensive and wealth as the royal family come from wealth and richness.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 
That Britain may have accessible things whilst there are other recommendations towards upper class women reinforcing that the magazine is directed towards women with high pay jobs. Also that Britain is not an ideal place to have holidays in and how it can have a negative view towards Britain itself.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler? 
People with minimum wage jobs as the recommendation products show expensive purchases such as spa jewellery and more. This is because everyone doesn't earn the same income which can lead to negative views that  only provides for the rich and not for other audiences that want to sav money or have a specific budget towards spending on.

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?





In all 3 of these adverts they relate towards the royal family and it implies how tatler is reinforced and targeted towards wealthy people as the representation of the royal family supports this point
