Advertising CSP 1: OMO print advert

 1) What year was the advert produced?

This advert is produced in 1955.

2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s? Add as much detail to this answer as you can as these are the social, cultural and historical contexts we will need to write about in the exam.

Women were presented as inferior and powerless and they were presented to be as a stay at home wife making information about women is misleading as this i9s an example of a negative stereotype.

3) How does the heading message ('OMO makes whites bright') and the style of the text promote the product?

Its quite bold and it stands out making it eye catching to there audience and also how the word bright is in a capital letter for the B emphasizing that the product being portrayed is worth paying and that its effective .

4) Analyse the mise-en-scene in the advert (CLAMPS): how is costume, make-up and placement of the model used to suggest women's role in society?

The use of hair and makeup shows its from the 1950s since the hair and makeup are on the trend at that time and it shows the women's femininity and the high camera angle presents women as inferior.

5) Why is a picture of the product added to the bottom right of the advert?
To show what the product looks like for the consumers to know what product the whitening cleaner looks like so that the consumers know what to purchase.

6) What are the connotations of the chosen colours in this advert - red, white and blue? It contrasts the effect of the clothes from the colour theory and how its gonna make a difference to the clothes and how the product is 'life changing' and beneficial.

7) How does the anchorage text use persuasive language to encourage the audience to buy the product? Give examples.

The bold font of the text catches the eyes of the audience and the women's facial expression shows how effective the product is and also for there consumers to remember the brand as it is easy to remember the brand as its quite short for the title to gain recognition and more audiences.

8) What representation of women can be found in this OMO advert? Make specific reference to the advert and discuss stereotypes.

That they only work in domestic and that house work is the only choice for women to be in as in the 1950's they would be rejected to jobs outside of there homes as they would be seen as unfitted for there standards in there society back then.

9) What is the preferred reading for this advert - what did the producers of the advert want the audience to think in 1955?

That this Advert is targeted towards women and that the aim of this is that doing cleaning and laundry is there job which indicates that there jobs in the 1950's were very limited and often quite unfortunate as there were no opportunities for women working in jobs that they desired and aspired to be working at.

10) What is the oppositional reading for this advert - how might a modern audience respond to this text and the representation of women here?

The oppositional reading for this advert is that women are not in control and that in todays society this would be seen as women are weak which is quite misogynistic and very reinforced towards what women's roles are when both men and women can take over the job of doing laundry equally.
